Microsoft recently announced that it will start charging Windows 7 customers a monthly fee beginning January 14th 2020, if they want to keep their computers safe. This paid service will be made available until January 2023.

What You Need to Know
If you currently use Windows 7 (along with the other 40% of computers globally), you have the following options:

  • Beginning January 14, 2020 you will need to pay a monthly fee to Microsoft if you want to continue receiving patches and security updates
  • These paid security updates will be made available until January 2023 and the price will increase every year
  • After January 2023, users will need to upgrade their OS or be subject to security vulnerabilities
  • This extension is made available only to those who have Volume Licensing. The vast majority of everyday consumers (think those who purchased with OS already installed) will not be subject to this offer and will need to upgrade ASAP.
