It’s almost that time of year – snow is melting, clocks are being moved ahead, warmer months are on the horizon. Most associate “spring cleaning” with a home or even an office, but rarely does one look to take this time to reorganize server rooms, technology, or other IT sources.

What Does Your Server Room Look Like?
As an IT services company, we have witnessed some interesting situations when it comes to the care of technology equipment. As the server is the heart of your company’s network, it is important to take good care of it.

Whether your server takes an entire room, is in a closet, or shares spaces with an office, here are some guidelines for keeping things clean and systems running smoothly.

– Organize Wires and Cables
Make sure wires are not exposed and cables are organized. This offers a clean look and will reduce the time required for network connectivity troubleshooting.

– Keep Things Cool
You need to make sure your server storage space is kept at a cool temperature no matter what. Your server works really hard for you, and can overheat easily.

– Keep Dust to a Minimum
The fans that keep the server cool also pull dust into equipment. This causes a blanket of dust to cover the internal components. This traps heat, which will slow things down and over time can shorten the lifespan of your server.

– Secure Location
It is important that wherever your hardware is stored, it is secure. If your server is sharing space in an office, consider a lockable enclosure to secure it.
